Arctic weather

Choose the city you want to see the forecast for.

Knowing the weather conditions is very useful to better your odds to see the northern lights, the midnight sun, and all the wonderful nature. But for your safety, you should also be aware of the conditions if you are hiking in the mountains, at sea, or maybe driving yourself on the road. Keep in mind, the winter conditions are totally different from summer! Checking and updating your insurance coverage before traveling anywhere is always a good idea.

Driving conditions in Scandinavia during the wintertime can be challenging, due to the cold temperatures, snow and ice on the roads, and reduced visibility.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when driving in Scandinavia during the winter:

  1. Weather conditions can change rapidly: In the winter, the weather can change quickly, with storms, blizzards, and sudden drops in temperature. Be prepared for these changes and check the weather forecast before you begin your journey.
  2. Snow and ice: Snow and ice can make the roads slippery and reduce visibility. Slow down and increase your following distance to allow for more time to react to changing conditions. Use winter tires, or at least tires with the «M+S» mark which stands for Mud and Snow, this will provide better grip on the icy and snowy roads.
  3. Use headlights: In some Scandinavian countries it is mandatory to have your headlights on at all times, not only during the night, to increase visibility for other drivers.
  4. Be prepared for long journeys: During the winter, road closures and snowdrifts can cause delays, so be prepared for the possibility of longer journeys. Make sure you have enough food, water, and warm clothing in case of unexpected delays.
  5. Be aware of road conditions: Be aware of road conditions, especially in rural areas where snowplows may not have cleared the roads. It is important to check the latest information about road conditions before driving, and to adjust your driving accordingly.

Overall, It is important to remember to drive defensively, be aware of the changing weather conditions, and be prepared for the possibility of delays. If you’re not confident driving in snowy or icy conditions, you may want to consider other forms of transportation, such as public transportation or a guided tour.
